Report: Tebow below average on test

While former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow wowed evaluators with his on-field performance at the NFL combine last month, he scored a 22 out of 50 on the Wonderlic test, the Palm Beach Post reported, citing an NFL source.

The 12-minute test measures an individual's learning and problem-solving abilities.

According to the Post, the average Wonderlic score for an NFL quarterback is 24. The newspaper also reported that the quarterback prospects in Mel Kiper Jr.'s latest rankings on ESPN.com -- Sam Bradford of Oklahoma (36), Colt McCoy of Texas (25) and Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame (23) -- scored higher than Tebow.

To put those scores in perspective, the Post compared Wonderlic numbers of run-of-the-mill NFL quarterbacks such as Alex Smith (40) and Matt Leinart (35) to those of Pro Football Hall of Famers Dan Marino and Jim Kelly (both 15) and an established star such as Donovan McNabb (14) of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Tebow is a Heisman Trophy winner who won two national championships at Florida. According to the newspaper, he graduated with a 3.66 GPA majoring in family, youth and community services.

Grades and Wonderlic scores likely won't determine how his NFL future will unfold. In an attempt to better adapt to the pro game, Tebow is changing the way he holds a football, shifting it from his waist to his shoulder. He intends to show off his refined style on his pro day for scouts at the University of Florida on Wednesday.

"There are things that I can get a lot better at -- my fundamentals," Tebow said in February. "I've never been asked to shorten or quicken my release and not have a loop in it. The changes I'm making have gone very well and it's becoming more and more natural to me."

New York Yankees are coming to Tampa Bay!

Yankees games to air on ESPN 1040 and Bay Biz 1470

Genesis Communications announced today that New York Yankee play by play games will air in the Tampa Bay area in 2010 on ESPN AM 1040 (WHBO) and Bay Biz AM 1470 (WMGG). The company reached an agreement with the New York Yankees Radio Network to air all Yankee home games (excluding Tampa Rays games) totaling 72 beginning with the Yankee home opener on April 7.

“The World Champion Yankees have always had a large fan base in the Tampa Bay area and we are excited to be able to provide this extensive coverage on both 1040 and 1470. The night coverage for ESPN 1040 covers most of the Tampa Bay area. The addition of Bay Biz 1470 fills in the northern portion of the area”, says Allan Davis Genesis Communications Vice President of Programming.

All broadcasts will include the Yankees radio network Pre and Post game shows, plus, AM 1470 WMGG will also carry Michael Kay’s (Yes Network Voice of The New York Yankees) popular New York Baseball Tonight from 6-7PM every night.

“The Yankees began training in Tampa in 1996, but the ties to the area with the Steinbrenner’s have been much longer. Add to that the northeast transplants and the result is a Yankee Nation here in Tampa Bay. We have been receiving requests for years to carry Yankee games. That day has now been realized.” Quote from Genesis Communications CEO Bruce Maduri.

For a complete schedule of the games to be aired on ESPN 1040 and Bay Biz 1470 go to ESPN1040.com and click on the Yankee logo.

In addition to ESPN 1040 WHBO and BAY BIZ 1470 WMGG, Genesis owns and operates NewsTalk AM 820 WWBA in Tampa, ESPN AM 1080 The TEAM WHOO, AM 1190 ESPN Deportes WAMT in Orlando and NewsTalk AM 1060 WIXC in Melbourne.

Chamberlain falls further behind in race for Yankees' No. 5 spot

LAKELAND, Fla. — Joba Chamberlain says he knows the deal when it comes to the fifth starter’s spot in Joe Girardi’s rotation.

Now he has to start pitching like it.

“I understand what’s at stake,” Chamberlain said after getting spanked by the Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium yesterday in a 9-8 Yankees victory. “You got to get better. You can’t worry about what [the competition] is doing. There is a sense of urgency but not a panic button.”

Chamberlain is correct: Two outings into spring training isn’t time to panic. Chamberlain’s body of work — since walking off a Texas mound with a shoulder problem on Aug. 4, 2008, that forced him to miss a month — has been pedestrian.

In 42 games (31 starts), Chamberlain is 9-6 with a 4.59 ERA and has given up 178 hits in 1682⁄3 innings, walked 79 and fanned 147. That’s too many hits and not an acceptable walk-to-strikeout ratio.

Yes, the Yankees didn’t help him last year in the second half, when they limited his innings as a starter. And he is 24. But by now the Yankees believed Chamberlain would at least be close to a top-of-the-rotation hurler.

Yesterday when he was working on getting his pitches in on right-handed hitters, Chamberlain wasn’t easy to watch.

In 21⁄3 innings, Chamberlain gave up six runs, five hits, walked three and fanned one. Gerald Laird delivered a grand slam that highlighted a six-run third inning after Chamberlain didn’t allow a run in the first two frames.

“I got a little tired,” said Chamberlain, who was slowed by a stomach virus early in camp that cost him eight pounds and that bothered him in the last outing. But this week he declared himself at full strength.

And then he ran out of fuel.

“My delivery was a lot better, I need to keep my legs [strong]. I worked on throwing in and I didn’t cut any balls off,” said Chamberlain, who has given up eight hits and six walks in 32⁄3 spring innings. “I had a little hitch in my delivery and I fixed that. I will go to the bullpen and continue to work.”

If you forced the Yankees to tell the truth a month ago, they would have said Phil Hughes, who worked 22⁄3 innings yesterday, was the arm they wanted in the fifth spot. That’s still the way to bet, but Alfredo Aceves and Sergio Mitre have been very good, and Chad Gaudin hasn’t been terrible.

Girardi, who says the real evaluation process will begin when each hurler makes his third outing, insists it’s a five-man competition.

Can Hughes and Chamberlain land in the bullpen? Will one be a starter and the other Mariano Rivera’s set-up man? As wild as it sounds, could Chamberlain open the year as a Triple-A starter?

“I think any scenario is possible,” Girardi said. “We will have to make evaluations that we think are the best. Very few things in this game end up the way they started.”

When Chamberlain surfaced in 2007, he charged out of the bullpen with a blazing fastball, filthy slider and was embraced by everybody. As a starter, there have been glimpses of that stuff but nothing sustained.

When Chamberlain pitches Tuesday against the Astros, he will be facing the biggest spring training game of his young career. Because if Girardi is telling the truth — and there is no reason to believe he isn’t — Chamberlain’s evaluation clock will begin ticking loudly.
